The Stud is the culmination of a familys' passion for Orpingtons and pure bred poultry in general, the owner, Sue, is a Committee Member of The Orpington Club of Australia, also, the Assistant Secretary of The Victorian Rare & New Breeds Poultry Society Inc, and a life member of Associated Bird Keepers of Australia Inc. As such it is a pleasurable duty to promote the Studs chosen breeds, as well as encouraging the ownership of pure bred poultry, and to uphold a high standard.
The development of the Blue, Slate, Lemon and Lavender Cuckoo, the Gold, Silver and Blue Crele,
the Gold and Blue Partridge, and the Gold Barred Buff in Orpington, also the Cuckoo in Silkie, and Blue, Splash and Cuckoo in the Phoenix are acknowledged as some of The Stud's achievements here in Australia.
Other Cuckoo colours in Orpington are in the final stages of development - to be announced and debuted soon.
# Update = in 2012 there are now 2 new lines in large Lemon Cuckoo Orpington starting to be developed by other Breeders, giving much hope to the advancement of the colour. There is also a line of Buff Cuckoo in Northern NSW under development.

The Stud has Orpingtons that are decendants of ones direct from England, and has also formed new lines in select colours by mixing some of the best quality lines in Australia from both the East and West Coast.
As well as maintaining these opposite coast lines seperately.
We do re-house excess select breed quality up to and including high end exhibition quality birds in the July / August of each year.
All excess birds are advertised as available for re-housing = no advance orders are taken.
Birds that are offered for re-housing are at least 11 months old to ensure both quality and health.
The Stud does not approve of, nor advocate, the re-housing of culls (birds with defects and/or mismarked birds).
Each season we do supply a limited number of eggs from the breeding pens within Australia only
We do not export birds or eggs = overseas readers would need to contact Breeders in their own country for stock.

The Stud is located in South Gippsland, Victoria amongst rolling hills and other natural features of the area. With above average rain falls there is an abundance of fresh clear water all year round. |
Experiencing hot summers and the occasional bush-firestorm, as well as cold wet Winters with attendant freezing violent, often destructive, wind-storms the area is not always kind to those that choose to live here. However, the beauty of the hills with their Spring and Summer emerald green and mixed with the Autumnal vibrant shades of red and yellow, along with the scenic Southern Ocean vistas, more than adequately compensates for the annoying weather. |
The house is old, built by the grandparents of the original owners. At that time it was a larger than average house for the area. Now, it is smaller than most and a cozy family home.
We enjoy living here in the almost isolated surrounds, listening at night to frogs calling to each other in various dams and water courses. Boobook Owls visit at night, Magpies and Currawongs frequent during the day and all sing for us. The Kookaburras are always present, watching, laughing at all we do. |
Native animals and birds visit regularly, some, like the Wombats and Koalas, live here full time. A small herd of Deer also lives on the property. The Stag; a fine looking white fellow, regularly approaches the back house gate for a treat of grain. Wombats and Wallabies regularly travel across paddocks and sometimes visit in our house yard. The herd of Deer are usually seen in their favourite valley or amongst the pines. |
Amongst all this natural beauty the Stud’s Orpingtons live happily, along with a few Silkies, some Phoenix and a handful of turkeys and geese. All watched over by the ever alert and observant Maremmas. |
The Stud was named 'officially' not many years ago by a friend's husband, who after hearing the term Cuckoo Stud for so many years from others, suggested to start using the name. So the Cuckoo Poultry Stud of Australia was 'born'.
It was suggested that the 'of Australia' part be added to differentiate between this and overseas ones. |
Over the years, we have owned other breeds of fowl as well as the Orpingtons, but by 2004 we had settled on the three breeds we want to continue to work with.
This being our much loved Orpingtons in both standard size and bantam, various colours. The endearing Silkies in White, Black and Cuckoo And the long tailed Phoenix in Partridge, Black, Blue, Splash and Cuckoo. |
Orpingtons have been owned by the family since 1947 with the arrival from England of the family’s first Cuckoo and Black birds.
How the family came to own these birds is outlined elsewhere on the site. It is a typically Aussie Digger tale of mischief and mateship. Both men mentioned are sadly missed. |
